Welcome to The Alliance Archival Project!
Hello and welcome to The Alliance Archival Project, a blog dedicated to preserving and sharing the Fun Facts and interesting Bits of information related to the SDP-Liberal Alliance.
What was the SDP-Liberal Alliance?
The SDP-Liberal Alliance was a political alliance formed in the early 1980s between two distinct political forces in the UK: the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Liberal Party. The goal was simple yet ambitious—to create a centrist alternative to the established dominance of the Conservative Party and Labour Party.
The origins of the Alliance can be traced back to a split in the Labour Party. A group of moderate Labour MPs, including the charismatic Roy Jenkins, Bill Rodgers, David Owen and Shirley Williams, became disillusioned with the direction the party was taking under Michael Foot’s leadership. This led to the formation of the SDP in 1981. At the same time, the Liberal Party, led by David Steel, was struggling to gain ground against the major parties.
On June 16th, 1981, the SDP-Liberal Alliance was formed at Dean's Yard. While the alliance wasn’t without its challenges, it presented a new political vision to the British electorate. The Alliance aimed to represent the centre, promoting liberal policies, economic moderation, and a focus on civil liberties and democratic reform. It was a bold attempt to break the political status quo in the UK.
Why the Archival Project?
As time moves on, the rich history of the SDP-Liberal Alliance is often forgotten or overlooked. We believe this collaboration’s legacy is far too important to be lost to the pages of time, and so we’ve created this blog to help preserve and celebrate the Alliance’s impact.
Through this project, we will be sharing everything from photographs and campaign materials to speeches, articles, and interviews with key figures from the time. my goal is to create a comprehensive digital archive of the SDP-Liberal Alliance
